This project, “SEE Pathway: Redefining Higher Education in Azerbaijan,” addresses the multifaceted challenges confronting Azerbaijan’s education system. It explores the complexities of the current paradigm in Azerbaijani universities, highlighting the need for transformative changes to align higher education with modern societal needs and global standards.

The Problem: The project identifies the dominant paradigm in Azerbaijani higher education, where universities primarily serve as credential degree-providing entities rather than fostering holistic learning and personal growth. This paradigm, characterized as a wicked problem due to its complexity, hampers students’ academic and personal fulfilment and fails to meet employers’ expectations.

The Shift: To address this issue, the project proposes the “SEE Pathway” program, focusing on Social, Emotional, and Environmental Awareness. This holistic approach aims to transform universities into institutions that prioritize developing students’ soft skills, emotional intelligence, and environmental consciousness alongside academic knowledge.

The Transition: Key strategies for facilitating this transition include enhancing academic freedom, increasing funding for education, and fostering collaboration between universities and professional sectors. By empowering students with a broader skill set and global perspective, Azerbaijan can cultivate a more competitive workforce and contribute to sustainable societal development.
